The Mayans

Along the shores of the Yucatan

The Mayan Empire: Rise & Fall

August 7, 2012

The Yucatan peninsula, located in southeastern Mexico, was a warm home for the Mayan people. It is known for its beautiful landscapes and scenery, as well as ancient landmarks created by the Mayans. The turquoise blue water is warmed by the afternoon sun, inhabiting coastal dolphins and octupi as well as coral reef on the soft ocean floor. Cieba trees provide a large home to colorful parrots and macaws along the coast and within the rain forest. Jaguars – the Mayan praised cat – peer through the orchids and flowers of the Bromelaid in hopes of finding prey.

In 1511, a small, raft-like Spanish boat filled with only fifteen men and two women who were blindly trying to find their way to Cuba when they stumbled upon misfortune and drifted ashore the vast peninsula. After landing on unknown territory, they were captured by the Mayans. They were then divided up by a strange looking people with piercings who spoke a language they could not understand. Frightened by the unknown, the Spanish captives had yet to find out what the Mayan people practiced. Some were taken as slaves, while others were sacrificed and killed as part of the Mayan religious offertory practices. This was the first Spanish encounter that would lead up to a conquest by the Spanish, and the fall of the Mayan empire.

Among the captive Spaniards were two men who managed to manipulate the Mayan people into almost equal rights and privileges. Geronimo de Aguilar managed to escape his captor and seek refuge with a Maya ruler and later became a leader of a Mayan tribe. Gonzalo Guerrero earned his freedom by proving his bravery and earned the standing ranks of a Noble Warrior.  These men would later help and hurt the Spaniards in their conquest for Maya land.

The first Spanish conquest took place during 1527 and 1528 where Spanish conquistador Francisco de Montejo petitioned the King of Spain and was successful in gaining the right to conquer Yucatan. After the first given attempt, the Spanish conquistadors were unable to conquer the Yucatan, so Francisco lead them to Mexico, where they would attempt to gather a larger army in hopes of gaining control of the Mayan cities.

The second conquest took place a few years later in 1531 when Montejo had a larger army and more allies within the Mayan empire. His forces allied with the port city of Campeche with the help of Geronimo de Aguilar. After becoming allies with the city, he set up a fortress and sent his son, Francisco de Montejo the Younger inland with an army to attack Chichen Itza, which Monejo declared would be the Royal capital of Spanish Yucatan. The locals of Chichen Itza rose up and contained control of Chichen Itza, the army withdrew, and they fled to Honduras. In 1535, Montejo withdrew the conquest to Veracruz, which left the Mayans in control once more.

Chichen Itza

The Mayan civilization started in early 250-900 A.D. They had a large population numbered in the millions, filled with talented and skilled people. With a high population came the requirement to create a sizable amount of food in order to keep Maya’s kingdom strong. The Mayans became skilled farmers in the rainy forests of Yucatan. They cropped and maintained their food supply with simplicity. They were very knowledgeable in agriculture, growing corn and squash, but also making sure to not overuse the soil they had already used. The diet then, as it is now, was stapled by maize. The Mayans were not only good at growing sources of food, but also at hunting and herding wild animals as a source of meat and protein.

They were able to build large buildings such as temples and palaces, and were known for their detailed designs and exquisite detail in their architecture. The Mayans began going crazy with architecture and had many monumental buildings. Not only were they creative with their artwork, but they were also inventive. They were known for the things they brought to the surface. The Mayans invented the calendar. They did this using their astronomical observations and studies. They made a year consisting of 365 days and even brought to leap-year the surface as the astronomy changed. The Mayans believed as part of their religion, there were “bad luck weeks”. During these weeks, the Mayans would do their best to do nothing. They would only perform sacred rituals, including human sacrifice and bloodletting.

Human sacrifice was a central role of the Maya religion. The Maya people worshipped many gods and they believed in order to have contact or receive revelation from these gods, human sacrifice and the spilling of blood was in order. To do this, the Mayans would take victims who were being held captive and lay them across an alter where they were held down and a priest would cut just below the ribs. The heart was then ripped out and burned as a gift to the gods. Another priest called the serpent was used as a direct way for communication from the gods. During many ceremonies, the blood of many victims was spilled until the serpent made it known the gods were satisfied.

The Maya people would sacrifice as many as it would take to provide whatever they needed. For example, if they needed moisture and they were in a drought, they would sacrifice and draw more of their own blood until it started to rain. The same if they needed an excess in food, they would sacrifice many until their needs were satisfied as believed by the gods.

Bloodletting was another form of sacrifice and all the Maya people were expected to do it. The higher the rank was of the person, the more blood was expected per week. Blood came mostly from the genitalia of the people and thorns were used to draw the blood. They would tie thorns to a string and thread it through the chosen body part and the remaining string would lead the blood into a bowl or onto a piece of paper. After the bloodletting, the Mayans would either pour their blood over an open flame or burn the paper that was soaked in their blood. Many Mayans have countless piercings all over their bodies and bloodletting was the initial reason for this. Today, blood sacrifice is still a part of Mayan religion; however, they no longer use humans as a live sacrifice. They most commonly use chickens or other animals as sacrifices.

Though the Mayan empire was highly populated, they were essentially unstable as a nation. The government was constantly being overturned and cities were being destroyed and restored in various Mayan monuments. Though this seemed to be an advantage to the Spaniards, they could not outnumber the Mayans at war. After many years of changes in government and destruction, city-states were established and there were lesser versions of hierarchy within the Mayan nation. This was another obstacle for the Spanish because without a central government to overthrow, there was a less strategic way of taking over the Mayan empire.

In 1540, Montejo handed down his authority to his son Montejo the Younger and he set out conquest of Yucatan again. Geronimo de Aguilar – a captive from the first Spanish encounter – was helpful to the Spanish as he translated for them and helped build allies. Montejo invaded Yucatan and claimed the capital of T’ho, which was renamed Merida. After gaining control of Yucatan and Merida, the rest of the city-states agreed to abide by Spanish rule; however, there were many who revolted against the Spanish government for many years.

The dark and fateful day of the Spaniard’s first encounter with the Mayans marks an unforgettable time in history where Spanish and Mayan came to know one another. One hundred and seventy years later, the Spanish overtook the Yucatan and forced the Mayan people into subjugation. The amount of blood that was spilled in human sacrifice and bloodletting from the Mayan people did not protect the Mayans from what was to come.

Midterm

Ashley Droubay Nobles
Midterm Paper

I heard the scissors take inches off my hair as my Aunt Jolene cut and styled it.  My family calls her salon the center of gossip. Jolene happens to find out everything about everyone in Tooele County while people are in the chair getting their hair done and she doesn’t keep it a secret. She was blabbing about something I don’t know anything about and then our topic of conversation shifted to me and I heard her say,
 “Lindsay would never sneak out”.
Lindsay is her daughter, who is 3 years younger than I am. This comment would have been fine if I hadn’t been sneaking out lately and she hadn’t found out about it through the center of gossip. As she was rambling on, I smiled as I replayed in my head the time that I snuck out. I soon realized it was the best decision of my life.
It was Friday night and, like most teenagers, I had plans with my friends. We were going to the bowling alley to do some bowling and then we were going to come back and watch movies at my house. My best friends wanted to sleep over but my parents would never let them since they lived about a mile away. We bowled for what seemed like ten hours and then went back to my house to watch movies. We only got through one movie and everyone wanted to go home. Soon, everyone had left. I was exhausted. As I was getting ready for bed, my phone went off. It was my good friend Derek. I hadn’t seen him in a while and he wanted me to come hang out with him and his friend Kasey cause “he has this awesome new truck” as Derek put it.  I knew of Kasey but I had never formally met him. He had dated Bridget Downey, who happened to be a girl I despised.
I quickly got dressed and snuck out the window, which was pretty easy to do since there was no screen on the basement window. I crept quietly through the front yard and onto the dirt road walking about 200 yards to get to the spot where Derek and Kasey were picking me up. Derek let me sit in front, which was a little awkward at first. It was dark, but Kasey was wearing a white hat and a black Nike shirt that said “Just Do It”. He smelled like abercrombie and looked like the model in the abercrombie and fitch pictures. He had a handsome build and cute face with light brown eyes and brown hair. He was extemely attractive.
I brought a CD for us to listen to which included all my favorite songs at the time. We were driving around Tooele while listening to my CD and trying to decide what to do when I suddenly had a great idea.
“Let’s go steal a ‘Droubay Road’ sign! I’ve always wanted to hang one up in my room!” I exclaimed.
“I’ve done that before,” said Derek, “if I knew where I hid it I could just give it to you.” Kasey looked at him, then looked at me and said,
“Why bother, let’s just go get another one for her!”
I was so excited! I thought, ‘Why would these two guys want to risk getting into trouble just for a road sign for me?’ It didn’t matter; we were getting that road sign.
We headed south on Droubay Road looking for the least public outlets to take the sign from. We came up to Smelter Road, which was almost the end of Droubay Road and decided this was where we would take the sign. We parked the truck and got out. Kasey dug through his toolbox for tools needed to take the sign apart. He found what he needed and they quickly got started on the sign while I kept watch for cops or pedestrians. It was pretty dead since it was 1:00 A.M. All of this excitement and realizing what time it was made me forget about how tired I was earlier.
“Got it!” Derek said as he and Kasey headed toward the truck. They threw the sign in the back and we headed back toward my house.
I didn’t want the night to end, so I told Kasey to go to Wal Mart first so we could get drinks and goodies. As I was looking in the side mirror, I noticed a car behind us. The streets were dark and it was hard to make out the type of car that seemed to be following us. We went under a street light and I knew instantly it was a cop. We had just stolen a street sign and there was a cop behind us. My mind started spinning and I tried to come up with a plan that would get us away from the cop.
“There’s a cop behind us, and I think he’s following us,” I told Kasey.
“I know, I saw him a few minutes after we left with the sign,” he said.
I sensed panic and worry in his voice as we all tried to come up with a plan.
Derek suggested, “just act casual, go to my house and drop me off and I will get it out along with my bike and it will look totally normal.”
I was worried about his plan, but it was much better than anything I could think of. The only thing that was on my mind was the fact that we could have records for defacing public property and I had been out of high school for a couple months!
Luckily, the cop didn’t follow us all the way to Derek’s house, but we were still worried he might come back after we left his house and see us, so we took the sign into his room and hid it under the bed. Derek told us he was tired and wanted to just turn in for the night. I was happy and excited! I got to spend some alone time with Kasey, who was extremely attractive, funny, and smart. I began to think Derek did this on purpose. He had been talking about setting us up on an official date for a month now, so this must have been his idea of a date.
We drove around and talked for a couple hours and then he took me home. Nothing happened, and I didn’t expect anything to happen. About a week later, Derek called me and asked if I wanted to get together with him and his girlfriend and Kasey, sort of a double date. I accepted and he told me we were going to go paintballing. I had never been so I was excited to try it out! After being pegged with paintballs by Derek and Brittany, we decided to go get ice cream and then head back to watch a movie.  I caught myself checking Kasey out and remember being so attracted to him. He had a way about him that told me he would protect me no matter what situation we were in. We got in the truck to head toward Derek’s house to watch a movie and Kasey asked if it was okay that we stop at Wal Mart because he had been talking to a friend. I didn’t think much of it until we got there. His friend was a girl named Nicole, who appeared to be highly intoxicated and was driving. He left for a minute, went into the store with her, then came back out and talked to her at her car for a while. I was not happy about that. Wasn’t this supposed to be a date?
After he came back, we left for Derek’s house.
When we got there, he said, “I have to leave, but I’ll be right back.”
We went downstairs and put in the movie. I started to feel out of place. I had been waiting for Kasey to get back for over an hour, so I decided to write him off as just a bad date and a boy in the past. I told Derek that he had my number and could give it to Kasey if he felt like he wanted to talk to me after everything and then I went home. A few minutes after getting home, I got a phone call. It was Kasey. “I’m really sorry that I left our date, I don’t want you to think I was ignoring you or putting you out. Nicole, that girl that we met up with was driving drunk and I went and talked her into giving me the keys. I didn’t want anyone to get hurt,” he explained. I told him that I wasn’t sure he was telling the truth and he asked if he could come up and talk to me. When he got to my house we talked for a couple hours and he ended up kissing me. I had been kissed before, but never like this.  I was on Cloud 9. This was the most amazing kiss I had ever experienced. The term ‘butterflies’ used to describe the feeling you get when you like somebody was highly exceeded. I knew that I wanted more time with him and that this wasn’t just a thing of the past anymore. The world seemed to stop for the moments he was with me.
A year later, Kasey asked me to marry him. We were married on October 3, 2008 and plan on being married for eternity! I guess two wrongs do make a right.
“So why did you sneak out, Ashley?” asked Jolene.
 I answered, “I don’t know, but I’m sure glad I did.”
She snickered something under her breath and I left her salon with a new hair cut and a smile. I never knew such good things could come so unexpectedly.

Lake Powell

Lake Powell

The sky is a vast reflection of what is below it. The waves beat upon the red stained sand shores as we unload our cargo into our old and medium sized houseboat. The smell of wet sagebrush after a rainstorm mixed with gasoline from various types of watercraft tease my nostrils. As we get in the smaller boat, memories enter my mind seeing the red cliffs that are mini amphitheaters. Echoes of boats voices, laughter and splashes fill the canyon. We arrive to the beach where we will camp for the next seven days. As I walk on the beach, the wet sand is cool and soft on my feet. Entering the separate, dry part of the beach, the sand is fire to my feet. I can feel blisters forming so I step back onto the wet stand to cool them off. As I step into the water, clouds of sand form around each step taken. Sea shells make appearance on occasion as I wade through the warm water. I pick one up, it is white with a smooth yet bumpy texture and it is cut in half so that the inside is smooth and delicate.
A breeze creates the sound of swaying trees and bushes that wisp my ear drums as the sound enters my ears. Boat engines roar and make waves and emit gases into the air that mix the smell of gasoline and sage brush together. The water is like a soft surrounding blanket of warmth that soothes the mind, body and soul. Today is the day we go on an all-day tour of the landmarks. They are unforgettable. Rainbow Bridge is a vast cliff that is hollowed out underneath its surface creating a shaped rainbow that also looks like a bridge. We will need to hike up to it, since the water level is lower than years ago when you could drive your boat under it. As we hike, I see lizards scurry on cliffs and under rocks. Various types of bugs crawl through the hot sand and make small footprints.
Annie's Canyon contains a natural overhang that is a cliff hollowed out underneath it from continuous waves and water beating upon it. As we head back to camp, I notice the water level is much higher than it normally is. The view of a cliff shaped like a Mexican Hat comes into view. Near our camp, memories flood my mind. Such a mysterious and fun place; I never want to leave.

We have all had one of those days...

The phones were ringing at 8:00 in the morning and I was standing near my desk attempting to comfort four coworkers with the fact that the office was going paperless. My mind immediately began to wonder if this was a good idea after all. Dawn asked, “how will we let you know what has been done?” while Joanne exclaimed, “I thought we weren’t going to do this until the 5th” after which, Nate asked where we would locate the old files and Cindy wondered anxiously how we were going to get through a Monday where we are double booked and trying to go paperless.

Once I caught my breath to answer questions and give guidance and comfort, I realized just what kind of struggle this would be for everyone. Our office has done things the same way for 27 years. Who was I to tell everyone it all would be fine and that everything would work out? I was just the girl in insurance billing who had barely three years under her belt staring at three coworkers who had over ten in this office alone.

I started to give instructions to those who needed it and then began to do my daily duties. Only then, did the scanner stop working. The scanner is entirely central to us going paperless. $300.00 spent on a brand new Epson scanner and it decides, on the busiest day of the week and not to mention the day we go paperless, to stop working. ‘What do I do?’ I thought,  ‘There is no way this is going to work.’ I immediately called a friend that works in another office that could possibly give me a solution to my problem. Kelli told me to turn the scanner off then back on, that didn’t work. She then had me uninstall and reinstall the driver for the software we use. Boom! It worked. The scanner was alive and now this dreadful day could go on.

Sitting at my desk, I became even more stressed as coworkers had more requests and/or questions. It seemed as though we were rebuilding our establishment and the foundation wasn’t as strong as it had been for the past 27 years. Constructing a new way of doing things was like building a mini mall on a sand dune.

I was sweating, which rarely happens at the office as I’m usually in need of a jacket or sweater because the doctors have the air conditioning up so high. I looked at the thermostat, it was 82 ° F. I wondered to myself how it could possibly be this hot in June at 10:30 in the morning, let alone inside a building with central air. I asked Dr. Wells why it was so hot, he went and checked the air conditioner and came back to report it was frozen and therefore wouldn’t work. We would have to turn the fan on for a period of time until the air conditioning thawed out.

As the temperature rose, so did my stress. At one point in the day around lunchtime, the 6 lines we have available were all being used. All the while, patients were coming in waiting to be seen or with questions about his or her account. Today had to be the day one of our “hard-to-deal-with” patients would come in upset about his bill. Bill Murphy came to my desk with a look on his face that suggested he might start yelling at the top of his lungs. “Why do I owe $84.96?!” he asked with a voice that made me think he was somewhat of a know-it-all. We have always had problems with Bill. I calmly explained to Bill why he had owed this much money and after trying to argue with me for several minutes he paid his bill and was gone.

As the day was coming to an end and 5:30 p.m. was nearing, I looked at the thermostat, 85° F. Since normally I am done at 5:00 p.m., I started to feel a sense of relief that the stressful day at work was almost over and I could go home and get ready for Yoga. Everything was finished, the patients had all gone home, the phones had stopped ringing and I had no need to use the scanner! ‘I can go home now!’ I joyfully thought. I took my keys and purse in my hand and locked the door behind me with a headache, but managed to form a smile.

Looking at today from an aerial perspective, I guess it could have been worse, and really wasn’t terrible considering all things. I worked through the confusion and stress we were having, I cleared up any details that were unclear to any of my coworkers, fixed the scanner, and happened to leave the temperature behind as I left for the day.  I am sitting here, thinking to myself that I am thankful for days like yesterday; days that make me human and imperfect. Though getting to leave work may have been the best part of my day, I won’t forget that we all have had one of those days.

My intention for this semester

This semester, I intend to put my whole heart into learning more about writing and English literature. To me, writing is very complex and difficult. By the end of the semester I would like to think about writing an essay and have a spark or excitement about doing it. I would like to expand my vocabulary and use it in my writing. Creating a grammatically correct essay with intelligent words would be a huge accomplishment for me.
